Ian is editor and a primary author of new INCOSE Systems Engineering Competency Framework and its accompanying Assessment Guide. As a result, he is perhaps one of the best sources of understanding as to why the new framework is the way it is, its strengths and weaknesses and how its content was intended to be used in the definition of role and the assessment of systems engineers.
Ian has vast experience in deploying competency frameworks. He started deployment of the original UK Chapter framework within his organisation in 2010 and subsequently supported deployment of several tailored variants in large and smaller organisations across the globe. Furthermore, he led the work adapting the UK framework for use internationally by INCOSE as part of their wider Systems Engineering Certification Programme, successfully piloting an assessment scheme both in the UK and internationally.
Ian has over 25 years’ experience in various senior leadership roles for private and public companies and has been responsible for managing and controlling systems engineering activities on multiple complex national and international development programmes ranging in value from £250K to £1B in domains as diverse as automotive, transportation, space and military aerospace.
Ian is a Chartered Engineer, Fellow of the IET, member of BCS and INCOSE ESEP. He recently retired but remains an active member of the INCOSE Certification Advisory Group and until 2019 was the Professional Development Director for the INCOSE UK Chapter.
In July 2021 it was announced that Ian would receive an INCOSE Outstanding Service Award in recognition of his work as co-author and Editor-in-Chief of the new INCOSE Systems Engineering Competency Assessment Guide.
